NearVision CK (which stands for conductive keratoplasty) is currently the only FDA-approved alternative to reading glasses for patients who have lost their up-close vision due to presbyopia. Presbyopia, which begins in our 40s, makes it difficult to read or see things up close, even in people who have enjoyed a lifetime of perfect vision.
NearVision CK can help patients eliminate the need for reading glasses by using a controlled release of radiofrequency energy to shrink corneal tissue, which steepens the cornea. This steepening creates a safe and predictable modification to the surface curvature of the cornea to help patients see at near distances. In FDA clinical studies, 98% of patients were able to read newspaper-size print without reading glasses after the CK procedure.
What this means for Baby Boomers who are dependent upon reading glasses is they will be able to more easily read the paper, read menus and price tags, see the numbers on the phone, and do gardening and hobby work after having NearVision CK.
NearVision CK is minimally invasive and painless, and takes only a few minutes to perform. The latest advancement, called LightTouch, has made NearVision CK even more effective and more comfortable for patients. NearVision CK is not intended for nearsighted patients, which may be better treated with IntraLASIK. A full eye exam is needed to determine if NearVision CK is right for you.
Generally, good candidates for NearVision CK:
- Are over age 40
- Had great vision their whole life
- Require reading glasses to compensate for fading near vision
